Although not as ram-packed as its been for other reggae shows featuring wider known acts such as Sizzla, Anthony B, Beenie Man and Capleton, on May 9 the Zen Nightclub in Port of Spain was still filled with patrons feeding off the vibe of German reggae artiste Gentleman and the Far East Band.

This reporter must admit that it was amusing to see him speaking about fighting against oppression of his people as well as burning Babylon. Adding to the attraction was Gentleman's on, then off again Jamaican accent.

Laying aside those oddities one must admit that Gentleman does have some good music and he does deliver an entertaining performance accompanied by some slamming musicians. The singer and band had the Zen crowd moving in unison and singing along to every song presented on the night. Even at the end of the performance the audience continued calling for more.

Opening his set with "Superior", Gentleman took the stage skanking old school style and was greeted by the deafening screams of not just the women but some men as well. One man got so excited he nearly fell over the railing on level two overlooking the stage.

Gentleman begeisterte 7300 Fans beim Konzert auf dem Roncalliplatz. Die Affinität des Hörers zu Reggae allerdings muss schon ausgeprägt sein, sonst kommt nach mindestens anderthalb Stunden so etwas wie Langeweile auf. Davor schützen auch nett eingebettete Refrains und zeitweilige HipHop-Anflüge nicht.

[...]Yet, while Dominic was an anomalous novelty within wider reggae culture, performers such as Gentleman occupy a less conflicted space. Despite hailing from Cologne, the 32-year-old singer, born Tilmann Otto, has spent at least six months a year in Jamaica for the past decade, collaborating with acclaimed producers and vocalists including Robert "Bobby Digital" Dixon, Donovan "Don Corleon" Bennett, Jah Cure, Cocoa Tea and Anthony B. Unlike Buddz, Gentleman generally steers clear of the rougher stylings and subject matter of dancehall.

He has racked up several high-quality albums, notably the current Another Intensity, and a flurry of domestic hits in Jamaica by concentrating on a 21st-century variety of roots music known as "one drop". It's a timely choice, given this strand of reggae's recent rise to prominence and a pragmatic strategy that allows a white artist comfortably to navigate tricky questions of authenticity and appropriation.

"My relationship with reggae began with me listening to my older brother's record collection -- artists like Dennis Brown, Garnett Silk and Beres Hammond," he says.

"What I liked was how universal the music was: themes of love, justice and truth that anyone could understand. That's where my inspiration comes from. I can't pretend to be anything I'm not, so I don't sing in patois, I sing in Jamaican English, because that's where I learned the language; and I don't talk about growing up in the ghetto, because I didn't. I want to make positive music for all people, and that includes a Jamaican audience."

He says the way music is consumed in Jamaica makes life easier on white artists than might be expected. In contrast to the music video culture of Europe and North America, songs are first heard on the island at dances or on the radio. That allows music to be judged on its own merit before a face can be put to it.

"Sometimes people are still surprised to find out that I am not Jamaican," he says. "This happens especially in the countryside, because people in rural places still get most of their music from the radio. People will sometimes laugh when they see me, but not in a bad way. It means that they already liked my music for its own sake."

It has not always been an easy journey, but for a man clearly smitten with the island and deeply immersed in its culture, even the toughest experience can be seen as a backhanded affirmation.

"I've had some great shows," he says. "But the one that made me realise I was part of Jamaican music was playing the Sting festival in Kingston a while ago. When I got on stage, the crowd was hyped up and wanted to hear rough dancehall. When I started singing songs about love and unity, they threw bottles at me. It was ugly, but I was being treated the same way anyone else would have been in that situation. They weren't being nice to me because I was different. I was just another artist that they were mad at!"[...]

Der Schlusspunkt des 32. OpenAir St.Gallen - der deutsche Künstler Gentleman - muss seinen Auftritt im Sittertobel leider absagen. Das Management teilte uns am späteren Samstagnachmittag mit, dass sich Gentleman in Belgien einen Nerv eingeklemmt habe und nicht transportfähig sei. Der einzige deutschsprachige Reggaemusiker, der in Jamaika anerkannt wird, bedauert seinen Ausfall ausserordentlich. Er hatte sich nach seinem magischen Auftritt im Sittertobel von 2003 sehr auf das OpenAir St.Gallen gefreut.
Wir sind darum bemüht, trotz des bedauerlichen Ausfalls das Festival zu einem gelungenen musikalischen Abschluss zu bringen.
Ansonsten verläuft das Festival friedlich und nach Plan - die Stimmung ist ausgelassen und das tolle Festivalwetter trägt viel zur guten Atmosphäre bei. Noch gibt es Tickets an den Tageskassen und an allen Vorverkaufsstellen.

Queen Omega is back with a new EP produced by Bost and Bim, the same duet who produced her last album, Destiny. Entitled ‘Revolution’, this four tracks piece is due out for the 7th of March on the french label Special Delivery.
For sure, 4 titles, it's a bit short…But it's good. Within minutes, the young reggae Queen of Trinidad and Tobago is rebelling with the German Gentleman on 'Revolution'. Then she gives us a ganja anthem with 'Good Cannabis' on an instrumental from Serge Gainsbourg just after paying tribute to all dads with her song 'Big Up Papa '.

Mi hear say big film camera up there and a big time production wid jib arm and ting. Mi know say Sizzla and Gentleman did have a bad tune together name 'Lack of Love' so mi a wonder if this song ah go harder than that. Big up Kalonji, dem caan violate the ting.

Germany's Gentleman was a crowd favorite on Saturday night as well as he ran through his modest list of hits like, "Superior" and "Runaway." Nothing against the guy. His backup singers were good, and his band was tight. Something about him was just hard to connect with. But I was in the minority on that one (in multiple ways) as melanin levels seemed to be divided on his set. Folks with a lot of it looked bored, but the gaggle of spoiled white teenage girls who dominated the first few rows by the stage were in love. Of course they were all wasted and underage (which I can vaguely remember) so their taste in music isn't to be trusted anyway.
